On 16 April 2025, the UK Supreme Court unanimously ruled that, under the Equality Act 2010, the legal definitions of “woman” and “sex” refer to biological sex. The judgment states that transgender women, including those with a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC), are not included in the definition of “woman” under this legislation. The ruling followed a legal challenge from the group For Women Scotland, supported by JK Rowling, and may affect access to single-sex spaces and services in the UK.

At shesaid.so, we firmly support trans women and gender-diverse communities. This ruling is deeply concerning, and we recognize its potential to further marginalize trans people. In solidarity, we are sharing resources, including our recent support for Sashkia Menendez’s Trans Charter for Music, the Queer Capita pledge that shesaid.so has signed, and practical advice for allies.

Oscar Davies - Nonbinary Barrister

Oscar Davies, known online as @nonbinarybarrister, is the UK's first publicly recognised non-binary barrister. They use their platform to demystify the legal system, focusing on trans and non-binary rights, and to advocate for inclusive legal reforms.

In their recent Instagram video post, Oscar discusses the implications of the UK Supreme Court's decision in the Elan-Cane case, which denied the legal recognition of non-gendered identities on official documents like passports. They argue that this ruling perpetuates a legal system that fails to acknowledge the existence and rights of non-binary individuals.

Oscar's content is a valuable resource for understanding the intersection of gender identity and the law. Their insights are particularly relevant for those interested in the ongoing struggle for legal recognition and equality for non-binary and trans people in the UK.
