Nine Ways Taylor Swift Has Changed the Music Industry

Taylor Swift is one of the most successful and influential artists of her generation. She has broken numerous records, won countless awards, and amassed a global following of millions of fans. But what is it about Taylor Swift that makes her such a force to be reckoned with? We have explored some key factors that have contributed to Taylor Swift's success.

1 - Championing Artist Rights

In the mid-2010s, Taylor Swift made headlines as an advocate for artists' rights. In 2014, she pulled her music from Spotify, protesting the platform's low royalty payouts. Swift's bold move was followed by another stand in 2015 when she challenged Apple Music's decision not to pay artists during its free trial period.

Swift's public outcry led to a quick policy reversal by Apple. These incidents showcased Swift's significant influence, used to champion fair treatment and compensation for artists.

2 - Taylor's Version

Scooter Braun sold all Taylor’s masters to Shamrock Holdings, a move that Swift opposed. Despite her efforts, the sale went through. In August 2019, Taylor Swift revealed plans to re-record and release her six previous albums.

Her decision received overwhelming support by fellow artists; e.g. Olivia Rodrigo negotiated full control of their masters, while Bryan Adams, re-recorded their material following Taylor's lead. The re-recorded albums achieved immense success with Taylor’s fans as they included bonus tracks, surprise collaborations, and fresh perspectives.

3- Taylor's Version Impact

When Swift announced she would re-record her first six albums in June 2019, the concept of re-recording masters has evolved from a music-business niche for legacy artists like Frank Sinatra to a big headline topic.

Josh Binder, an attorney who represents SZA, Doechii and others, said in a recent Billboard article the Taylor Swift scenario is rare, and most artists never have to exercise their re-recording rights.

However, as Taylor Swift re-recorded her ‘Red’ Album in 2021, Universal reworked contracts to block artists from doing the same with their music.

4 - Genre-Hoping Success

Swift's ability to evolve across genres has made her Eras Tour a standout event of the year. Most artists don’t try as many styles as Swift has, and even fewer are able to find any real success by crossing over from one genre to another and then back again.

The Grammy winner is present on more than a dozen Billboard rankings, and the songs and albums that find space on these competitive lists show that whether she’s dabbling in pop, alternative, rock or the twang that made her a household name, she almost never has an issue racking up enough sales to chart.

5 - Look What You Made Me Do

Spotify announced that in October 2023, the singer had become “the most-streamed artist in a single day in Spotify history, and “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” became Spotify’s most-streamed album in a single day this year.

Swift replaced herself as the most-streamed artist record holder, a year after she captured the title back on October 21, 2022. Earlier this month, she and Jack Antonoff celebrated their song “Cruel Summer” hitting No. 1 on the charts – four years after its initial release.

6 - Breaking Records

When "Speak Now (Taylor's Version)" debuted in July, it was Swift's fourth album to occupy the Billboard 200 chart's top 10 at the same time, alongside "Midnights," "Lover," and "Folklore." This made her the first woman to have four albums in the Billboard chart's top 10 simultaneously. Swift is the second living artist to do so after Herb Alpert in 1966. Prince also previously achieved this after his death in 2016.

Swift and Fincher are the only directors who have managed to make history by winning back-to-back awards in the Best Direction category at the MTV Video Music Awards.  Fincher for"Express Yourself" and "Vogue," and Swift for "All Too Well: The Short Film" and now “Anti-Hero.”

7 - Eras Tour Bonuses

Swift reportedly gave bonuses totaling more than $55 million to those working on her show. That money was distributed to her dancers, riggers, sound technicians, catering. Multiple sources reported that Swift gave $100,000 bonuses to each of the 50 truck drivers of her tour —those amounts alone total more than $5 million.

As for Swift? Don’t worry about her—even if she is a reported $55 million down as a result of her generosity, she's doing just fine. Before the tour, Swift's combined income streams were estimated at $92 million, landing her at No. 9 on Forbes' list of The World's 10 Highest-Paid Entertainers.

8 - Taylor Swift’s Billionaire Era

Taylor Swift’s Eras tour has catapulted her to billionaire status, according to a report from Bloomberg in October 2023, making her one of the few recording artists to build a 10-figure fortune almost entirely from her music.

The “most definitive account yet” of the 33-year-old pop star’s wealth claims that the singer, who has broken box office records with her Eras tour concert film ($92.8m in its opening weekend) and leading the charts again with the re-release of her 2014 album 1989, now has a total net worth of about $1.1bn.

9 - The Swiftie Community

Taylor Swift broke the barrier between artists and fans, embracing social media not just as a messaging tool but as a direct channel to connect with her audience. She might not have been the first one but her outreach extended beyond the virtual space and included personalized gifts, secret listening parties, intimate meet-and-greets and unexpected album drops was quite unique and has redefined how artists connect with their fans.

Describe a day in your life as VP, Partner Acquisition and Success

Each day is different! But what excites me is listening to music, providing guidance and ideas to artists/artist teams, and engaging with the variety of music communities and organizations looking to educate and elevate artists in the music community. Bringing feedback from our partners back to our team helps to ensure we address the needs of the community we're building for and are constantly improving. Anything that allows me to help contribute to the growth and success of artists is a fulfilling feeling.

How did you get your start in music?

Before even getting into the music industry, I'd volunteer to help with artists' merch at their show when they were in-town. Being at live shows always showed me the profound impact music has on individuals. From these events, I was determined to pursue a career in working with artists to be a part of this beautiful human experience and an internship was my first step into the industry.

3 values that guide your life

1. Honesty - as it builds trust and open communication.

2. Kindness - treat people as you'd like to be treated!

3. Perseverance - there will always be ups and downs in life, but moving forward allows for growth and continued success in the future.

Tips for staying grounded on a tough day

Recognizing what a blessing it is to be a part of this incredibly diverse industry, collaborating with talented artists, creative thinkers, and business professionals on the daily. Focusing on the positive helps shift perspective and reminds you to look at the bigger picture.

Tips for anyone that wants to get into your industry

Make genuine connections while you network. Show people who you are, your interests, and what sets you apart. Offer recommendations and highlight how your passion and skills can add to the team! One piece of advice you'd give your younger self Celebrate the wins along the way, both big and small! It's easy to be caught up in the day-to-day, the hustle and bustle of the business, but these celebrations will become cherished memories. Enjoy the journey as suddenly you'll look back and another decade of life has flown by!

The Rise of Interpolation: Why Pop Music Is Embracing the Past

The charts are currently flooded with dance-pop tracks boldly borrowing from 80s, 90s and 00s classics. Is this a creative fusion of nostalgia and innovation, or does it signal a lack of original ideas in the industry?

1 - Interpolation Overload

The charts are currently flooded with singles employing interpolation - the musical technique of incorporating elements from an existing song, such as lyrics or melodies, into a new composition.

Recent examples include FIFTY FIFTY’s “Barbie Dreams” (feat. Kaliii) which features an interpolation of Janet Jackson’s 1997 classic “Together Again” and Charlie XCX’s "Speed Drive" which contains an interpolation of Toni Basil’s 1981 song"Mickey".

Interpolation isn’t a new practice but the tipping point came in 2023 when David Guetta and Bebe Rexha released "I'm Good (Blue)" in which they interpolated Eiffel 65's "Blue (Da Ba Dee)," reaching No 1 on the UK charts.

In a recent interview, Jack Melhuish, former general manager of Parlophone Records UK, highlighted the impact of this particular release. This marked a significant moment in the trend's escalation, prompting more producers and artists to embrace it.

2 - Future Nostalgia

Unlike traditional rap music samples that often faithfully recreate vocal hooks or original song productions, tracks that embrace interpolation, create a musical déjà vu by reusing specific lyrics or melodic phrases from dance classics.

When asked about the trend, Radio 1 DJ Natalie O'Leary pointed out that as certain dance classics were cultural phenomena that shaped scenes of the time, they bridge generations.  We say, it’s a delicate balance between honoring the past and shaping the future.

3 - Interpolation & Catalog Acquisition

The rise in catalog acquisition also helps to explain how we’ve arrived at a moment when the pop charts are littered with chunks of old intellectual property. Nicki’s “Super Freaky Girl” and Yung Gravy’s “Betty” are just two high-profile examples. Latto skillfully incorporated elements from Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love," a track famously sampled in Mariah Carey's "Fantasy," for her own song "Big Energy." To add an extra layer of excitement, Latto even collaborated with Mariah Carey herself.

In March of 2006, Primary Wave announced its first-ever acquisition: the catalog of Kurt Cobain, for which it shelled out $50 million. Since then, they have acquired the rights to music by Bob Marley, Smokey Robinson, Prince, Stevie Nicks, James Brown, and Whitney Houston. Music publishing companies such as Primary Wave, own the rights to some of the most crucial American popular music ever recorded. Instead of passively collecting royalty income alone, catalog owners and managers are now actively marketing catalogues to new generations.

4 - Gen Z Decoding Musical References

Peering into the current pop charts feels like investigating a complex mystery, each song potentially holding hidden references. The art of crate digging has taken a digital twist, with TikTokers and musicians/producers like LUXXURY highlighting musical interpolations in popular songs by artists such as Olivia Rodrigo, Doja Cat, and Ava Max, all of whom have achieved chart success through these creative reinterpretations.

Interpolation in songs has become a focal point of analysis and debate in the music community.

The prevalence of song interpolations has led to a trend where music enthusiasts and self-proclaimed theorists engage in side-by-side comparisons of alleged plagiarism instances.

For example, Lil Nas X's "That's What I Want" subtly references OutKast's "Hey Ya," sparking discussions among copyright lawyers and “TikTok detectives”.

Similarly, Harry Styles' "As It Was" unmistakably echoes a-ha's "Take On Me," prompting fans to create mash-ups and even leading platforms like Genius to label "Take On Me" as a "sample" on "As It Was," despite the lack of official credits in the liner notes.

5 - The Artist's Perspective

If it was a hit once, it can be a hit again. Collaborations like Rita Ora's "Praising You,"feat. Fatboy Slim reimagine classics. Artists are on a creative spree, melding eras and genres. Artists and producers are seeing what works, and giving the market more of what it wants.

Much like Hip Hop’s inventive sampling in the 90s, today's interpolations are transformative. The industry isn't running out of ideas; it's reinventing them.

Music Insider: Halina Rice

Halina Rice is an electronic musician and AV artist creating emotive electronic music ranging from evocative soundscapes to beat-driven tracks.

Her live shows have been described as “part-rave, part art-happening” taking audiences from immersive experience to dance-inspired tracks.

With her last album ELISION released in 2022 to critical acclaim, her music has been described as “sublime and infectious” by Electronic Sound magazine and as “modern electronic music at its finest” by Headphone Commute.

As Rice states “my main focus is to present compelling, emotive and innovative music and visuals in order to move the audience outside of their day to day experience. I want people to come away from the shows feel invigorated and inspired.

Read our interview to discover more about Halina’s work and insights.

As an artist who aims to move the audience outside of their day to day experience, which emotions or reactions do you hope your music and visuals evoke in your listeners?

When I think about what I'm trying to evoke in listeners, I'm not really very prescriptive about it because I think everyone one kind of comes with their own experiences and things will resonate or they will react in different ways depending on their own individual experience.

But what I tend to find is that if there's something that I create musically or something that I create working with one of the visual designers, if something resonates with us or kind of excites us, then that's often going to create a reaction in the audience as well. So we tend to go for stuff that makes us feel something. I think it's a really individual way that people react to the events.

How do you prepare for large scale events?

For instance, I had a show at Village Underground on October 3rd. In that instance, it's just mainly about the technical side. Planning is probably the most important way that I prepare because in my shows I'm running the audio, the visual jewels and quite a large proportion of the lighting. It's making sure that I've done all the relevant site checks and understand what the venue capabilities are and checking that my setup is going to interact with their setup OK. Also, that I'm completely in line with the promoter for all the details about the event.

Then another aspect is when I run spatial sounds. In some gigs, I'm running multi speaker systems with sound coming all around the audience. I have a show coming up at Ade on Thursday, October. The 19th at a venue called The Other Side, which has just had a 14.1.5 speaker system installed.

And in that instance, there's a little bit extra planning, which is that you need to receive their speaker layout in order to be able to reprogram your sound so that it's coming out into the formation of speakers in their venue. So it's really just about planning and lots today.

What is the central theme or concept that ties all the tracks on your upcoming EP New Basis together? How did this theme influence your creative process while working on the project?

I think possibly for New Basis, the creative theme is something about contradictions. There's a kind of a clash of classical and more experimental forms.

Definitely I created chord structures that have quite a sort of long, almost recognizable contemporary classical structure, but then they would be presented in a sort of electronic instrumentation and I never really wanted those shapes to be 100% recognizable. Things twist and change throughout and there are builds of distortion. Then we kind of reflected that in the creative process.

Working with visual designer Frany Anthony, we actually used scans, 3D scans of natural objects. But then we kind of took those, recolored them and twisted and distorted them so that the visuals were matching the music. Organic and inorganic juxtaposition is what lied through the whole creative thinking behind the EP.

How do you stay inspired and innovative in your music and visual art?

One of the ways that I'd stay inspired is to go and see other people's shows, works or art presentations. For instance, there's a venue in London called Eclectic which is just in Waterloo and it's non profit making so they'll platform quite experimental ideas, students, etc who are just sort of trying things in quite a raw format. And that's really interesting because it can kind of trigger ideas or developments from that. And I'm lucky enough to also play at audiovisual festivals. I was at MUTEK in Montreal a few weeks ago and there was just a huge number of fantastic presentations from around the world.

Sometimes it's seeing other people's work but also just being in venues. For instance, being in a dome projection venue and just thinking this is really interesting and what would I do in this space? So yeah, just sort of getting out and about and having a bit of reflective time while you're absorbing other audience of visual events and you.

What advice would you give to emerging electronic artists?

The advice I'd give to emerging electronic artists is to connect with other like minded people in your area. If there are meetups of electronic, electronic or AV groups, it's a really great way just to share information and learn. Maybe you're going to collaborate or work with a few people that you meet there. And also, in a lot of these groups you're just performing maybe for other people in the group. It can be a really non judgmental place for you to trial before you take that in front of a ticketed audience, for instance.

And I think also it's great to feel like you're connected to a wider community because it can be quite an isolating thing to do. It's good to be able to call on other people as you solve production queries, as you work your way through what the right kind of format and setup is for you.

Halina’s EP NEW BASIS was released on 29th September via AWAL and is available through all streaming platforms.

Catch Halina Rice live at Rescue Rooms in Nottingham on October 12th, and Summerhall in Edinburgh on November 17th.

Halina is also part of the official programme at ADE 2023 this year performing a spatial audio and visual live set at The Other Side on Thursday 19th October, presented in L-ISA hyperreal sound by L-Acoustics.

The Future of Voices in Dance Music

with House Gospel Choir & REP Vocal Agency (ADE Lab Talk)

Description: Join us for an enlightening and thought-provoking panel-discussion as we delve into the evolution and best practices when working with Vocalists in the Electronic Dance music arena. The discussion aims to illuminate the crucial aspects of collaboration, artistic expression and identity and equity in shaping the ever-evolving landscape of the music industry.

We will explore the challenges faced from both perspectives with a particular focus on the consistent undervaluation of Vocalists. It’s important to acknowledge that there is still a prevailing undervaluation of predominantly Black sound in the music industry, particularly within the genre sounds of Soul and Gospel.  Black women’s vocals are often used to create outstanding dance tracks, yet their visibility remains limited.

Our conversation will delve deeper into how, as a community, we can strengthen partnerships between Vocalists & Producers to ensure that everyone benefits. This panel discussion is a call to action, inviting us all to collectively examine tangible ways in which we can educate and re-shape this age-old narrative.

Speakers:

Natalie Maddix; Vocalist, Choir Director, Vocal Producer, Songwriter & Founder/Creative Director of House Gospel Choir and REP Vocal Agency

Kelli-Leigh; Independent Artist and Grammy nominated Voice & Songwriter

Louie Vega; One half of Masters At Work & Nuyorican Soul, Grammy Winner, DJ, Producer, Bandleader & Entrepreneur

New shesaid.so Dublin chapter Co-Director: Nikki Raymond

shesaid.so Dublin are absolutely thrilled to announce that Nikki Raymond will be coming on board as the Co-Director of the Dublin team. Nikki will work side by side with current Chapter Director Lisa Murray to organise, coordinate and oversee the Dublin chapter as they launch into an exciting period of fresh activities and collaborations for the coming months and year ahead.

The Dublin chapter of shesaid.so, founded by Shauna Watson in 2018, initially focused on organizing skill-sharing workshops covering various music industry topics. They also partnered with the inaugural music festival "We've Only Just Begun" in August 2018, which featured an all-female lineup. In 2020, leadership was passed to Lisa Murray, who adapted the community to operate online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, collaborating with organizations like IMRO, West One Music Group, and the National Concert Hall to host workshops and webinars. Now, as the pandemic subsides, the chapter, led by Lisa and co-director Nikki Raymond, is gearing up for a series of events and collaborations, including educational workshops and panel discussions in partnership with the Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO), to support the Irish music scene.

We sat down with Nikki Raymond, and here’s a Q&A to get to know the newest member of the shesaid.so Dublin chapter!

Tell us about yourself!

My name is Nikki and I work in the music industry as a Promoter Assistant. I’m also an artist manager and a music reviewer for The GOO magazine which is printed locally here in Dublin. It took me a couple of years to figure out what career path I wanted to take after college. It blew my mind when I realised that you could have a career in live events and at that point the decision was made for me. I’ve also spent the last few years travelling whenever I can and have lived in four different countries (so far..). As much as I love exploring the world, I think my heart belongs in Dublin.

What are you looking forward to most as the new Co-Director of shesaid.so Dublin?

First of all, I am incredibly excited to be working alongside Lisa. I met her for the first time last year at a shesaid.so event and because of that I ended up reconnecting with an old college friend who I now manage - the universe works in weird ways. I’m also really looking forward to organising as many seminars, workshops, showcases, panel discussions and networking events as possible because there is an amazing community of like-minded people out there - it will be phenomenal to give people a space and a platform to amplify their talents and expand their skill set

Statement from Lisa:

I am absolutely thrilled to welcome Nikki to the shesaid.so Dublin team. I met Nikki at one of our shesaid.so Dublin Cocktails and Chats mixer events last year and we clicked immediately! Her enthusiasm, drive, passion and professionalism are going to make her an incredible co-director and I’m beyond excited to enter into this next season of shesaid.so working with Nikki by my side. We already have lots of exciting things on the horizon so stay tuned!

shesaid.so Mix 050: Bae Blade

The shesaid.so mix series aims to spotlight the diverse artists within our community. We’re committed to championing underrepresented voices from around the world, focusing on female, non-binary, trans and queer individuals. Our monthly mix series allows our contributing selectors to showcase their unique backgrounds and inspirations by creating exclusive, 30-minute live recorded soundscapes.

This month, we have the German DJ/producer Bae Blade, whose unique, genre-blending sound - a modern style that oscillates between electro, breaks, house, and techno with hip-hop influences - has garnered her a fervent following in the underground.

With a background in photography and only recently starting music during the lockdown in 2020, Bae Blade is a multifaceted artist whose intuitive skills have led her to become a regular at Berlin’s renowned HÖR radio station, a resident at RINSE FM, and an internationally touring DJ.

On the heels of these accomplishments, released her EP Mutual Pleasure earlier this month - a full-on onslaught of hard-edged, hyperfast techno/breakbeat/trance spiked with catchy hooks from other genres.

What inspired you to start the Bae Blade project during lockdown?

During the lockdown, I finally had the time to dedicate myself to projects I had envisioned for a while. The scene in North Rhine-Westphalia, where I'm from, felt too monotonous, and I wanted to play music that diverged from techno, allowing for more hip movement and incorporating more vocals.

How would you compare German electronic music culture to scenes from other countries?

It's a tough question and depends on where you are. I can only speak from the region I come from. In the western part of Germany, it's slowly starting to open up to other genres besides techno. In Berlin, where it's a major hub, it's a different story. I think it depends on the area, I believe there isn't just that one scene in Germany.

You have a background as a music photographer- do you feel like there were skills you picked up in photography that you've transferred over to making music?

It doesn't always have to be the most expensive equipment to achieve fantastic results.

Your new debut EP, Mixed Feelings, is an exploration of multiple underground dance music genres. What is the main connecting thread / overarching theme of the project?

The essence of the EP is simply to introduce myself via the facets that interest me within the genres. The EP is essentially a condensed set of me. With the EP title, I wanted to convey that one cannot narrow oneself down to just one thing, both as a person and in their art / as an artist.

Where is your dream place/venue to play?

Kyle Richards' White Party.

Music Insider: Iiris Vesik (Night Tapes)

Night Tapes (Max Doohan, Sam Richards and Iiris Vesik) is a London-based, genre-blending atmospheric dream pop band with haunting vocals by Iiris.

The band's inspiration came from both their lived experience in the world that they can see and touch, as well as the less tangible spiritual and metaphysical realm.

The 'Perfect Kindness' EP has been mixed by Nathan Boddy (known for his work with PinkPantheress, James Blake, Mura Masa) and mastered by Matt Colton (noted for his work with Flying Lotus, Flume, and Brian Eno).

Their debut single "Forever" has already amassed over 5 million plays, while their music continues to garner support from various media outlets. Having signed to Nettwerk Music Group in 2022, Night Tapes also made their SXSW debut in 2023.

These are Iiris's reflections on songwriting and valuable tips for overcoming creative hurdles.

What experiences impact your songwriting and the emotional depth of your music?

I think that being a musician is somewhat of a mystical, mythical journey because so many things are out of your direct control. You're a part of a bigger wave than yourself. It's bigger than you. And you're bringing creations from a world unseen, from that big wave out into the real world and making something out of nothing.

And I feel very lucky to have writing by my side because I can describe what the fuck is happening to me. And I agree with the existentialists. When you have the power to describe what is happening to you, you can somewhat take your own experience into your own hands.

For me, that has helped to feel like I can turn the things that happen to me into something useful and that I can take control. No, not control…I can take responsibility over my own reality and spot some treasures in the underworld.

At times I feel like I'm free and on the right path. Carl Jung has said “the work is the expression of my inner development for commitment to the contents of the unconscious forms the man and produces his transformations”. But to be honest, I just trust the unknown because it's been really useful, effective and easy for me to create.

I love the scientific and I love the empirical. But when it comes to art, the work I do is between me and the source. And the more I've let go, the more I've trusted, the more I've been able to flow in synchronicity, meet the peeps that I need to meet. And at best, creation has felt like magic and a journey of individuation. So I do recommend.

Tips for finding your creativity on a challenging day.

I think one can't really be creative if the Maslow hierarchy of needs is missing. The bottom half my body needs nourishment and sunlight and eating and exercise and all that good stuff that I didn't think I used to need. I used to think that music is number one and everything else is secondary and let me tell you, that was a bit destructive. I do NOT recommend.

So on a tough day, I think that there's definitely phases to creation (and to life), and it's good to not mix them up together. It's like if you're resting, rest. If you're working, work. There's chaos, there's order. And it's good to start from order, because without order, there is no harvest. So having a plan, having a setup, having an environment that supports your creativity is necessary and that comes through order. You create those things for yourself. You set them up in order.

And then when you get there, that's when you can go into chaos because you can let loose, vomit out the ideas that you did, just like get the material out so you'd have material to work with.

And then when you got the material, then you can see like OOH, what shape is this? What is this? And then you can your analytical mind, your intellectual knife and start to sculpture the thing of your vision, of your dream, what you're thinking.

And then once again, you have to go into chaos to let go of the outcome, to have some surprise, to be open to the highest, best outcome. Because the thing that wants to come through you is already somewhere out there in the world, unseen. And you can just act as a tool (if you're into that sort of way of thinking, which I am, because it's easy).

And then when things go, a lot of the times it's because you just don't know what phase you're in. Like in creation, try to start chiseling with an intellectual knife of a thing that you don't have to chisel. You need to have the phases in the right order and you need to be able to know which phase you're in.

So sometimes you show up, you try to implement your order for your harvest but sometimes it's good to just ask like, maybe this is not the time. Maybe it's time for a little chaos. Maybe it's time for a little bit of task free time. Maybe it's time to slug out a little bit, to breathe in so you could breathe out.

So that would be my tip for finding some power to go on on a tough day of creation.

(Yeah, this is long).

Artist Spotlight: Nonô

We are excited to feature Nonô for this month’s Artist Spotlight. The London-based artist from Rio, Brazil, has been described by NME as "a rising talent ready to become your new favourite artist”.

Nonô has over 200 million streams and has been championed on BBC Radio 1, with notable press support from NME 100, CLASH and Line Of Best Fit. Her single 'Domingo' heated up the summer with her club mix of dance-pop and Brazilian vibes.

Can you share a memorable experience that has significantly influenced your music?

A memorable experience that definitely has shaped my music is going on tour supporting ‘Example’ in 2022. That experience of being on stage every day really taught me a lot about what kind of music I wanted to make and how I wanted to make people feel - because it's a such a high pace energy environment that I just wanted everyone to have fun. I wanted that feeling of the live shows to translate into my music or everything that I was creating.

So after the shows I knew exactly where I wanted to go with my music; how to turn up the BPM, or to make (my music) more electronic. I feel that my shows are my favourite part of doing music. So yeah, definitely going on tour was the most memorable experience that has influenced my music

What's the one piece of advice you wish you had received when you were just starting out as a singer and songwriter?

A piece of advice that I would give to emerging artists is something that I'm also trying to tell myself. It just gets a lot, you know, when you're creating every day, and then you're also having to create content every day. And besides the songs, the marketing the content, you have to stay positive.

So besides not giving up is try to tune out the noise and try not to compare your journey to other people. My whole life, I grew up reading biographies. And something that really hurt me was when I was comparing my journey to all these incredible artists that I had read about growing up. And when your journey isn't going exactly like theirs you start thinking that, Oh, I'm doing something wrong, or it's not going to happen. At least I do that.

I'm pretty sure there's other people out there that might feel the same way; comparing constantly comparing themselves with other people. So if I was to give an advice to anyone that is emerging, is to work hard and to follow their creative dreams. Don't compare yourself. You're on your own path, and everything happens when it’s supposed to happen. The opportunity will come you just have to be ready for it.

What’s the one piece of advice you wish you had received when you were just starting out as a singer and songwriter?

The off days are just as important as the days you’re working. If you don’t allow yourself time to relax then you will end up creating the same song or worse. You might even lose the love for the thing that made you wanna follow this journey.

Building a fanbase and getting noticed in the crowded music scene can be tough. What strategies have you found effective in connecting with your audience?

Playing live shows is the most effective way of connecting with my audience as it’s a real moment! Everybody is there to have a good time plus I can see how they react to songs and in those minutes, we are genuinely forming a connection and our own world.

If you could describe your sound in just three words, what would they be?

Free, Energetic and Vibrant.

What’s the most unexpected thing you’ve learned about yourself since stepping into the music spotlight

I always knew I was a perfectionist but I didn’t know the extent of how deranged I actually am. I will lose sleep over parts of an unfinished song or merch items that I don’t think are 100% right yet.

Describe your morning routine

if I was to describe my morning routine, it's very simple. Very simple. Very easy. Because I wake up in pain, usually because I'm not a morning person. Unfortunately, I'm very much a night person. I want to be a morning person. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate morning people, but I am not.

So I try to wake up at like eight.

I fail. Then I wake up at nine and I have a chocolate milk because I don't drink coffee. Then I start getting ready for the sessions or whatever schedule program that I have in that day.

I usually start by picking out an outfit. I just sit on the floor and contemplate my whole life for like half an hour. And then I choose an outfit. Colorful outfit, usually. Then I go brush my teeth, get my makeup on, do the hair, put on accessories, out the door, I go to the studio.

So a typical day would be going to the studio. I would wake up, have my chocolate milk, brush my teeth, get my makeup on, get the clothes that I'm wearing, colorful accessories, then out the door, run to tube or bus, go to the session, stay in the session write a banger from like eleven until 06:00 p.m..

Or eleven till 07:00 p.m.. Or twelve till six whatever the time that it takes to create a song or two, depending on what we're doing.

If your music was a color, what color would it be and why?

I think it would be bumblebee yellow as I’m always trying to emulate the vibrancy of Brazil in my music so I think yellow/ orange, quite solar tones are very fitting.

3 things you can’t live without in your bag

Walkers crisps, a jumper and my rock salt luck charm.

If you could choose a famous landmark to host the ultimate Nonô beach party, where would it be and why?

I would definitely choose Rio de Janeiro because I'm from Rio. I would choose Copacabana beach because I grew up there. It's a very famous landmark I think everybody that knows a little about Brazil knows about Copacabana. I would throw it in February or March because that's when the vibes in Brazil are at the highest point. Summer is over there so you know it's gonna be hot. And yeah, definitely Copacabana would be the place for the ultimate Nonô beach party!
