SOLAH on Forever: 'I Wanted to Define the Artist I Want to Be'

SOLAH is a Brighton-based singer, songwriter and vocalist whose soulful sound has made her a familiar name in the drum & bass scene.

Following her debut album King, she returns with Forever; a record that broadens her sound while staying true to the melodic, soul-infused style that has become her signature.

Forever brings together collaborators from across the UK, Europe, Japan and Brazil, reflecting the global community behind drum & bass.

Across 14 tracks, the album moves between uplifting moments of love, joy and connection before exploring darker, more reflective themes, embracing the emotional contrasts that run throughout the record.

Your new album Forever moves between uplifting, soulful moments and darker, more introspective tracks. What was the story behind it?

My second album was much more about defining the artist I want to be through the D&B styles I connect with the most and stepping into a chapter where I can celebrate the music that got me to where I am and the people who play it and support it.

How do you balance being a private person while still sharing such personal music?

I am an open book really. The only thing that stops me sharing everything is the time I can dedicate to socials, the skill and ease of doing so and the knowledge that I can be my own worst critic. Catch me in a bar and I will tell you everything about myself, all my deepest and darkest fears and we’ll probably do a shot or two. ;)

What’s your favourite thing about making music? And what’s your least favourite part of the process?

My favourite thing is writing new tunes. There’s nothing better than receiving a piece of music you can’t wait to get your teeth stuck into, then spending a few hours with the vibes and ideas just flowing and dancing around the studio like you’ve just heard it for the first time. My least favourite thing is when the ideas do not flow, but you love the track so bad.

What’s your best networking tip for connecting with the right people in the music industry?

Reach out to everyone and fan girl your *** off :)

What’s one thing people often misunderstand about drum & bass artists or vocalists?

Hmm, for VOCALISTS, that we don’t absolutely love the music. I understand that singers usually have their feet dipped in many genres, but I have had my feet in the D&B foot bath for a very long time for a reason, I LOVE IT!!

What are you listening to the most at the moment?

Hmmm, due to quite a bad memory, (thank you clubbing), I struggle to remember all the music I favourite and star, so I just end up listening to a handful of things over and over. These include Ezra Collective, Cleo Sol, a Zero T or a Break Mix!
